A Quick Essential Guide to Apple's App Store

So its your first time viewing the App Store after getting your new iPhone or iPad, and youre off to downloading apps (applications) for your device. Before you click away those apps, allow me to provide you with a quick guide to the App Store, which should help you get familiarized right away with what it has to offer. Take note that this guide is for the App Store in iTunes and not for the pre-installed App Store button on your device. The simplest reason for that being the App Store in your device is a concise version of what it really is. As such, I would highly recommend using iTunes.

A Guide to the App Stores categories and subcategories

The App Store has effectively grouped the various apps into the following categories: Books, Business, Education, Entertainment, Finance, Games, Healthcare & Fitness, Lifestyle, Medical, Music, Navigation, News, Photography, Productivity, Reference, Social Networking, Sports, Travel, Utilities, and Weather. These categories can be easily selected from the drop-down of the App Store tab. Where youll certainly spend most of your time though is the Games section, which houses a big majority of the apps in the App Store. Hence, the App Store has provided subcategories for the different genres namely Action, Adventure, Arcade, Board, Card, Casino, Dice, Educational, Family, Kids, Music, Puzzle, Racing, Role Playing, Simulation, Sports, Strategy, Trivia, and Word. These subcategories are easily accessed from the lower right portion of the App Store.

A Guide to Top Charts and Featured Apps

For every category, the App Store has a couple of lists and charts to help you look for what you need. Comprising the large left portion of the App Store, you have the New and Noteworthy, Whats Hot , and What Were Playing lists. The New and Noteworthy list contain newly released apps. The other two lists supposedly contain recently hot selling apps and quality apps hand-picked by the editors respectively, although currently no one, apart from the App Store team of course, knows exactly how these lists are compiled. For the games section, you will also see a Made for iOS4 list, which is a perfect guide for iPhone4 users wanting to own games specially designed or modified for its retina display. Furthermore, also only for the games section, you have lists that compile highly-recommended games for certain special categories such as Best Sim Sports Games, Highly Addictive Games, Gripping Stories, Five-Minute Fixes, etc. These genres change every so often. The most interesting pa rt, however, of the App Store is the Top Charts. It is basically the simplest guide when shopping at the App Store. Although it is not publicly known how the Top Charts are exactly generated, all agree that the rankings are relative to their daily number of downloads. Take note that these are not total gross sales, as there is a separate chart for that category.

A Guide to Downloading

Before you can download, you need to have an iTunes account. Its fairly simple to register an account. You can do this by clicking Sign In on the upper right portion of iTunes, and then creating a new account. Once you have one ready, the next step would be to go to the applications page. You can get there through numerous ways. One could be browsing for it from the iTunes home page. Another would be clicking its icon from the charts or featured lists. A third way would be by clicking a link from a gaming website. Once youve accomplished this, you will see a description of the app, a couple of screenshots, and user comments/reviews at the bottom. To purchase and download, you simply need to click the corresponding button below the apps icon. If it is free, the button will read Free, and if it is not, the button will read Buy App including the price beside it.

Thats pretty much a quick guide of what to expect once you open the App Store on your iTunes. Have fun downloading!
